About This Video

In this video I take you with me as I go to buy a boat from a private seller, and I show you exactly what I look for as a beginner-friendly checklist. First, you’ll see what “bad to worse” looks like on a viewing—things like a split/cracked bilge pump situation and water sitting where you don’t want it. That’s the kind of red flag that should make you slow right down, ask questions, and be ready to walk away. Then we look at a boat that, from first impressions, is a totally different story. I point out the telltale signs that the owner genuinely cares: the boat stored under cover, a trailer that’s in good nick, proper straps, stabilizers, and even clever little safety touches to stop the trailer tipping. I also explain why a trim button is an absolute must in my book—safer shallow-water approaches and better efficiency when you’re up and running. We test the Yamaha 40hp outboard in a tub of water, and I show you what to check right away: prime the bulb, start it, and look for that steady telltale stream. If there’s no telltale, don’t run it—because overheating is how engines get blown. By the end, I explain why I paid the asking price: the overall care, the way it ran, and the confidence it gave me as a new boater.
