About This Video

In this video (Part 1), I’m showing you one of my favorite ways to instantly level-up a watercolor painting that’s feeling a little… mehhh. We’re adding bold, beautiful definition with brush pens and dip pen details—nothing complicated, just simple techniques that make your shapes read clearer and your painting feel more finished. If you’re a beginner, this is a really gentle way to build confidence with line and contrast. And if you’ve been painting a while, it’s such a satisfying “fix it” tool when you like the color but the piece needs structure. I talk through the supplies I’m using—like my Baohong sketchbook and a few pen options—so you can choose what fits your style. I also share the specific dip pen holder and nibs I’m using (and a close alternative if the exact holder isn’t available), plus Micron brush pen options for easy, controlled marks. The big takeaway is that you don’t have to repaint the whole thing to transform it: a few intentional lines, accents, and darks can pull everything together while still keeping that loose, relaxed watercolor feel I love.
