NOTE: This video is the first lesson in my Beginner Series for learning loose watercolor. Following a clear path can reduce frustration as you learn. The series shows the order I’d recommend for beginners, rather than randomly trying to paint loosely. It’s organized in a playlist with a few older videos that complement the lessons: New to Loose Watercolor? Start Here! Sometimes the best way to improve your loose florals… is to remove the flower. In today’s video, we’re doing something a little different. Instead of focusing on petals, symmetry, or creating the “perfect” focal bloom, we’re stepping back and practicing what actually creates looseness in watercolor: water, value, movement, and courage. So many of you have told me you struggle with painting loosely. You want that soft, effortless look — but somewhere in the process, things start to feel tight or overworked. This exercise is designed to help you let go of that pressure. We’ll: • Paint without a sketch • Focus on organic movement • Explore value and contrast • Work through the “messy middle” • Practice pushing past the fear of ruining something that looks good This isn’t about painting flowers & leaves. It’s about understanding where control sneaks in — and how to move through it. If you want to loosen your watercolor strokes — or have ever paused because you were afraid one more brushstroke might ruin it — this video is for you. ✨ Try this exercise and let me know how it goes in the comments. _______________ S U P P L I E S: **Please Note** As an Amazon and Meeden Associate I earn a small amount from qualified purchases when the links below are used. About This Video

In this first lesson of my Beginner Series, I’m taking the pressure off “painting the perfect flower” and showing you an exercise that gets straight to what actually creates that loose watercolor look: water, value, movement, and a little bit of courage. Sometimes the best way to improve loose florals is to remove the flower completely—so in this video we paint without a sketch, and we focus on organic shapes, flowy marks, and letting the brush do what it wants to do. I walk you through exploring contrast (light, mid, dark), working through the messy middle, and noticing where control sneaks in—especially that moment when something starts looking good and you’re afraid one more brushstroke will ruin it. This exercise is about practicing that “keep going anyway” mindset in a low-stakes way, so you can build confidence and stop overworking your paintings. If you’ve been trying to paint loosely but everything keeps tightening up, this is the exact kind of practice that helps watercolors become your calm place again.
