About This Video

In this video, I test out 読書メーター (BookMeter), which is basically Japan’s Goodreads, and I go all-in on the idea of logging everything there—because for holistic language learning, my reading life is part of my study system. I walk you through the actual logging process (what it’s like to add books, mark them as read, and keep a record that’s easy to maintain), and then I explore the different types of logs you can keep beyond just “finished books.” If you’re doing Japanese immersion through reading, having a place where your input is visible and trackable can be super motivating. After that, I look at the parts that are supposed to make BookMeter fun and useful long-term: monthly reading recaps, graphs, and the bookshelf feature. I wanted something that would help me reflect on my reading habits and keep momentum—like a gentle feedback loop for consistency. But spoiler: I’m underwhelmed. I share what feels clunky or limited, what I do like, and who I think BookMeter is (and isn’t) worth it for—especially if you’re trying to balance language learning with real life and you need tools that support your planning system instead of becoming another chore.
