You guys keep recommending distros now that I’m clearly a little obsessed with Linux, and it got me thinking about a laptop I actually lived with long enough to understand: the ROG Zephyrus G14. I used my AMD-based G14 as a daily for about 7–8 months—travel, docked at home, plugged in for days, real work—and it ended up being less about “gaming laptop specs” and more about learning its rhythm. With G-Helper tweaks, battery became predictable (around 6–7 hours in lighter workflows, closer to 5 on heavier mixed days), thermals surprised me (mid-40s docked with fans staying quiet), and durability was solid even though I don’t baby my gear. The OLED stayed gorgeous, scratches happened, but nothing structurally degraded. Then I look at the new G14 refresh and the biggest change is the display: a better-tuned OLED “ROG Nebula” panel with up to 1,100 nits HDR, improved factory accuracy, stricter QC, and—thankfully—much better reflections compared to the older bluish coating. Chassis details also got refined (subtler Slash lighting, better keyboard diffusion, small hinge and grill changes), but the big question for me is Linux. In 2026, both AMD and Intel are running Linux really well, so I’m aiming to get a proper unit and turn the G14 into my Linux machine—most likely Fedora (you guys won’t stop recommending it) or Pop!_OS—because these laptops get really interesting once Linux is on them.
