I went from a Windows laptop to a Linux-based setup and lived with it for about 45–55 days, trying Pop!_OS first, then briefly CachyOS, and finally landing on Zorin OS. The goal was simple: build a Linux ecosystem that actually makes sense with my Android phone (S25 Ultra) and the home lab I’m putting together. I installed Pop!_OS on a separate partition to dual boot, dialed in Nvidia drivers for a high-spec OLED laptop, tested DaVinci quirks, Bluetooth, gaming telemetry tools, and built a workflow with KDE + LocalSend + Google Messages/Photos/WhatsApp so I could stay connected across devices. But the reality of daily-driving Linux hit hard: I spent way more time researching than creating. Sleep mode was basically broken for me (bag smoking hot, laptop dead), and battery life was brutal—especially when I was traveling and using things like Parsec. I tried hibernation, power profiles, and even switched to iGPU-only testing… which straight-up gave me a black screen until I edited a boot parameter to recover. Eventually I migrated to a new NVMe, broke things again, hit dependency issues, and nuked my Pop!_OS install after an upgrade. That’s when I admitted Pop!_OS wasn’t working out for my use case, tried CachyOS (too complicated for what I needed), and decided Zorin OS was the more realistic “Windows-like” place to continue the journey—because yeah, Linux is worth it… but it’s also a skill issue.
