In this spring activities video, I’m sharing the exact Montessori-inspired work we’ve been doing to welcome the season—simple, hands-on, and really easy to set up at home. Whenever we start a new segment, I like to bring all of our resources to the table so we can “fish through” the books and materials together. For our flower study, we used our Montessori flower and leaf puzzles as references, a flower model, and (my favorite) a real flower—because it’s such a difference to see it in person versus only in a book. We took it a step further by dissecting a real flower and labeling each part, and my son absolutely loved it. After we recapped the flower parts, we moved into drawing (my daughter even used a metal inset because she swears it looks like a flower) and we referenced some of my favorite detailed resources like Julia Rothman’s Nature Anatomy and What’s Inside a Flower. Then we shifted into spring art: color mixing with droppers and primary food dye, and a tulip “painting” activity using cut cotton pads for vibrant petals. To tie in sunshine and early literacy, I also shared a super fun uppercase/lowercase matching activity using a paper plate and clothespins. And of course, we can’t talk spring without pollinators—so we wrapped up with bee anatomy, insect books, and Stamp Bugs to build and label our own honeybee before talking about how bees collect pollen and help make seeds.
