Making the face is the final step to creating a cat mug before it sits to dry completely. I hand-sculpt and attach the little face and eyes, and I also carve the fur (if needed). These kitties only needed whiskers. Once they are try, I will pop them into the kiln for their bisque firing. About This Video

In this Step 4 cat mug tutorial, I’m finishing the mug by sculpting and attaching the little cat face—this is the last big step before the piece gets set aside to dry completely. I hand-build the face and eyes, then carefully attach everything so it feels secure and intentional (not just “stuck on”). Depending on the design, I’ll also carve in fur texture, but for these particular kitties I kept it simple and just added whiskers. Once the faces are on, I’m thinking ahead to the next stage: letting the mugs dry slowly and evenly so they’re ready for bisque. This is the point where patience really matters—if you rush drying, you can invite cracks or weak attachments. After they’re fully dry, I’ll pop them into the kiln for their bisque firing, and then we’ll be one step closer to glaze and that satisfying kiln reveal. If you’re making your own animal mugs, this video is all about getting those small details (eyes, face placement, and texture) to feel cute and clean without overworking the clay.
