After I throw a mug on the wheel and trim the bottoms, I make and attach the handles. I've made hundreds of these tail-like handles, and I fear, at this point, this is the only way I know how to make mug handles, so I guess every mug has to be an animal with a tail. Nah, I've done other ways, this is just the main way I make them.
