In this video I’m sharing 6 really easy, low-prep ways to introduce counting with your toddler. I’m Abigail, mum to Samuel (3) and baby Noah, and I love activities that feel like play but still build confidence—especially if you’re just starting out with numbers. Everything here can be adapted to your child’s ability, whether they already recognise numerals or they’re brand new to counting. I start with a simple matching activity using numbers 1–5, circles, and little toys (we used animals/people) where Samuel “feeds” them blueberries by placing the right amount into the circles. Then I show a car garage counting game (just drawn on paper), a movement version of “What’s the Time Mr Wolf?” using bean bags, and a quick room scavenger-style counting game using small picture cards of items you can see around you. If your child doesn’t know any numbers yet, I also use “Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes” as a gentle way to talk about 1s and 2s (two eyes, one nose, etc.). Finally, there’s an easy basket throwing game where you ask for a number of paper “balls” and they toss them in—great for gross motor skills and keeping things fun.
