About This Video

In this video I sit down for a very chatty (and honestly a bit rambly) update on where my head is at with education—school, home education, and unschooling—because this is the year we need to properly decide what we’re doing before Samuel starts school next year. I’m not here to push a “school is bad” or “homeschool is best” agenda. I’m still forming my opinion, and I wanted to think out loud and invite you to share resources and your own experiences too. I talk about living in Scotland and how, as a Christian family, there are parts of the UK curriculum that make things tricky because some things feel impossible to opt out of. I also share how the pandemic seems to have made more parents question what’s age-appropriate and whether the system fits individual children. Then I unpack a podcast I listened to (1000 Hours Outside with Teacher Tom) about play-based learning, the idea that many children learn to read between 7 and 11, and the comparison of reading to learning to walk—something that happens when they’re ready. I also explore the two “extremes” I see in home education: recreating school at home versus a more relaxed, self-directed approach (often called unschooling). I share what I learned the hard way through potty training—read all the books you want, but if your child isn’t ready, you can’t force it—and I question whether I’m overthinking the whole decision, or whether either path could still lead to a well-rounded child.
