In this video I’m sharing five really simple preschool activities that encourage letter recognition and help your little one learn their ABCs. I keep it very hands-on and sensory, because in my experience it’s so much easier for young children (especially ages 4–6, and even younger toddlers) to learn letters by doing rather than just staring at a page and trying to memorise shapes. I also use “S” as an example because my son Samuel loves spotting the letters that match his name. I start with a play-doh letter where you roll a “snake” and bend it to match a big letter you’ve written on paper (a little knife helps for letters that need pieces). Then I show a Montessori-style idea using sandpaper letters—but I make my own with card, Sharpie and glitter glue so it doesn’t cost much. After that, I use a tray with a thin layer of sand or flour (I use flour when I don’t have sand) so children can practise forming letters and easily erase mistakes without feeling upset. To finish, I share a crafty “bubble letter collage” you fill with scraps/stickers/sequins while chatting about the parts of the letter, and a simple letter “line-up” page where they circle the target letter among lookalikes (like S, Z and 5).
