About This Video

In this quick five-minute review, I’m finally back doing some photography stuff again, and I’m talking about a lens that genuinely impressed me: the Viltrox 35mm F1.2. I bought it about two to three months ago and have already put it through 10+ portrait shoots, so this isn’t a “first impressions” kind of take—I’ve actually used it in the field. I break it down simply into pros and cons, because that’s what matters when you’re deciding if a lens deserves a spot in your kit. On the pro side, the image quality is superb: sharp in the center, sharp in the corners, and chromatic aberration is well-controlled unless you’re really pushing worst-case scenarios. The bokeh is top-notch, and for my portrait work, the look is just really nice—35mm feels “magical” on this lens. Feature-wise it’s also stacked: switches, function button, an aperture ring that can be locked/unlocked, plus weather sealing, all at a price that’s honestly bang-for-buck (I paid around $1,000 SGD / roughly €700–€800). Autofocus works pretty well in real-world use too. The two real cons are weight (it’s heavy and front-heavy, especially on my A7C II) and a weird low-light stability issue with image stabilization—something about the combo makes it harder for me to handhold slow shutter speeds compared to some Sony lenses. If you don’t shoot night stuff much, it’s a small issue, and overall I still think it’s a fantastic high-speed 35mm option that’s cheaper than first-party and competes extremely well for the money.
