Grado is a fun brand. Its headphones just dont follow any normal choices and you either like it or hate it. A new flagship and how does it feel? About This Video

In this first look, I spend time with the Grado Signature HP100 SE (loaner unit from Jaben) and try to understand what Grado is doing with this new “upsized” flagship. Grado is still Grado—same unmistakable look, but with some real refinements: the hinge design is nicer, the poles feel smoother, the metal cups look solid, and you get a 4-pin XLR-style cup connection that works with common Audeze/ZMF cables (I used my ZMF cable because I’m not a fan of the included 6.35mm-only lead). I also walk through the build close-up, including the pad options and why the stock setup can be a little polarizing. Sound-wise, I describe the HP100 SE as very open, wide, and “push forward” in staging—mid-forward and sometimes almost shouty, but without sibilance. It’s fast and dynamic, with punchy, quick bass (more slam than deep sub-bass rumble). For rock/pop/metal and energetic tracks (like Ado), it’s seriously fun; for slower, smoother vocal-focused music, that dip/hollowness in the lower mids can make vocals feel a bit wonky. Pads matter a lot here, so I test multiple options and end up liking a softer/deeper G-pad-style set from China that balances the mids better (at the cost of some stage). I also compare it to the Composer: Composer is the safer, more natural pick, while the HP100 SE is the high-fun, high-energy Grado flavor.
