Yoga for Moderation. 20 minute Iyengar Yoga Class. Apologies for the audio on this - we used the wrong microphone! Although this is an energetic yoga workout, it is not an aerobic exercise, designed, in and of itself, to burn calories and fat. Over time, a regular yoga practice is likely to lead to weight-loss, but not necessarily in the way you might expect. It is certainly true that yoga can change your body shape, lengthening muscle fibres, moving the muscles closer to the bones and generally giving you a leaner more toned look, but there is more to it than that. Yoga teaches us to be in the moment. When we practice yoga regularly, we start to observe our lives, we are attentive and we can start to bring a level of concentration into our everyday activities. This aspect of concentration and mindfulness means that yoga can help us to adjust our relationship with food, drink and other sensual pleasures. You should be enjoying your meals; taking time to choose, prepare, cook and eat wholesome food. Things go wrong when you are too rushed to make good food choices and when you are eating without thought, without pleasure, without attention. When life lets you do this, you eat without hunger and without joy. Food is important - buy the best quality food you can afford, and learn to cook it with care and attention, then savour it when you eat; don’t rush your food. Share meals with family and friends whenever you can and don’t pass judgement on yourself or others. No food item is intrinsically “good” or “bad”. We should be seeking to include as wide a variety of colours, textures and flavours in our daily food consumption as we can. As a general guide, aim for a diet that largely comprises seasonal, diverse, plant-based, unprocessed food. Eat slowly and in moderation. When you are full - stop eating!
