Iyengar Yoga for Beginners - Parsvottanasana Tutorial. Stage 2 In Stage 1 we looked at the pose using the hands to help support us: http://bit.ly/2XC1PXl, in Stage 2, we take the hands into Paschima Namaskar, Reverse Prayer Position which challenges the shoulders arms and wrists, as well as the balance, and changes what could be considered a basic pose into something requiring concentration, alignment and steadiness of mind and body. In this forward bending pose, Parsvottanasana, the legs are taken one in front of the other, which gives space for the spine to move. It can be a very useful standing forward bend if you have stiffness in the hamstrings, back, shoulders or leg muscles but the classic pose creates many difficulties for yoga students so we look at ways to improve the action. A yoga belt is used here, but you could use any cord or rope if you have no equipment. This Iyengar Yoga Tutorial will stretch your hamstrings and improve your forward bends. This standing forward bending action calms the nervous system, reducing tension and anxiety. Look out for this pose in our earluer released yoga sequence "Wake Up and Move!". Tight hamstrings are often associated with a stiff upper back. And we often see in those who come to yoga class with low back pain, the combination of a long spine and tight hamstrings. Stretching the hamstrings will, over a period of time, alleviate these back problems. Yoga also helps to improve posture, tension in the body and stress levels.
