In the classic version of this pose, you do need flexibility in the hips, groins and shoulders to enable you to work in or towards the pose. If you are stiff or have knee, hip or back problems, see if you can work on the chair in the ways demonstrated by Leo. If it is stil difficult then ask your Iyengar Yoga teacher to help you get the action in this pose. The classic version is not suitable for complete beginners or those who are still quite stiff although you can practice sitting on a chair with the foot to a pile of foam pads or to another chair seat. However, it should not be practiced during menstruation and, like many yoga asanas, should not be practiced during pregnancy. This pose helps to improve the external rotation of the hip, strengthens the abdominal muscles, improves strength and flexibility in the shoulders and is good for the health of the digestive system.
