About This Video

In this video I challenged myself to make a whole Deep House vibe using an older “classic” VST that people are sleeping on. I started the way I always do: template loaded, everything routed to the mixer, and then I built a simple groove from my own drums. I layered a clap with a rim for more body (because the clap alone can feel thin), added swing, randomized the hats (and even the pan) for that natural movement, then sprinkled in crash and atmosphere by sending it to an FX channel with a big reverb and a little delay before it. After that, I locked in on Xpand!2 (yeah… Expand is still the goat). I went straight into bass sounds, recorded a few ideas, and kept it feeling human instead of over-quantizing everything. Then I started producing in “moments” — mallets, soft leads, huge pads, choirs, risers — sounds that come in, do their job, and don’t overstay. I even added a pump/sidechain-style movement on the pad just to get that bounce without needing a trigger. The big takeaway: new plugins are cool, but the classics still sound huge if you pick the right patches, route properly, and actually enjoy the process while you’re cooking.
