Last week I went to Joe to cook up with my bro DJ Moema, and the studio had this big centerpiece: the Roland Fantom 08. I’m an FL Studio guy, I’m used to software, plugins, and my own prepared sample packs… so I set myself a proper challenge: can I make a deep house vibe on this keyboard using only stock sounds, and can I do it before Moema comes back from tennis in 20 minutes? I started where I always start—drums—but this time I had zero of my own kits. So I went straight to the safest bet for house: the 909. Once the drums were knocking, I added simple, repeatable E-piano chords to keep it deep and vibey without overcomplicating things. Moema walked in and was shocked I was sequencing on the Fantom, saying it sounded like old school house, and that gave me a crazy confidence boost to keep going. From there I dug for a bass, kept it simple, then layered a few usable stock synth/melodic sounds (even a trumpet) and balanced everything with the Fantom’s mixer sliders. I tried arranging in song mode and I’m not gonna lie—I failed, and saving also got complicated. But the big takeaway? The sound and feel coming out of an instrument is different, and this whole “dawless” moment reminded me that the skills transfer—hardware or software, the producer mindset is the real sauce.
