In this video I’m showing you how I’m getting that real nice, unique drum bounce that’s starting to replace the “standard” Deep House four-to-the-floor feel. Four to the floor is cool, but it gets boring and tedious fast, so I like switching the bounce up with small kick tweaks: extending the kick, removing the last hit, and dropping its velocity so the groove has movement instead of just punching the same way every bar. Then I layer a drum loop, pitch it down for extra groove, and start building energy in sections so the beat has moments where it rests and resets. From there I’m basically cooking while I arrange: hats panned slightly, open hat placed to lift the second part, and rolling rims with velocity shaping, zig-zag panning, and just a touch of reverb so it sits in the background filling the pocket. Once the drums feel “beautiful,” I drop chords using a minor 9 stamp, keep it simple, and use ghost notes to guide a repeating arp-style melody. The big takeaway is arrangement discipline: work in 16-bar blocks, change things every 8 bars, and let the groove lead everything—so your breakdown, bass switch-up, and drop all feel like they belong.
