I used a classic clap, an old school open hat, toms, and a rimshot to fill the pockets. I also used a kick but pitched it down because it felt too high for me at first. The tambourine loop was important too because a lot of those classic tracks have that shaker/tamb energy.

I made a reverb send on the mixer so I don’t have to load reverb on every single sound. Then I only send a little bit from the tom/rim elements—like half, not crazy. I also low-cut the reverb because you don’t want low frequencies building up in the reverb tail.

Nah, I thought about using Ripchord but I didn’t. I just played the chords in and recorded them, then cleaned up the timing and note lengths after. Sometimes keeping it simple is faster and it still sounds musical.
