In this video I put three “Explorer-style” watches side by side and talk through what’s actually similar and what’s not. I compare my Rolex Explorer 224270 (Explorer 40, $7,950 MSRP) against the Hanhart Pioneer Preventor HD12 ($1,660) and a Tisell 39mm Explorer-style watch that doesn’t even seem to be on their site anymore (they still have a 36mm, and it’s around the $265 range). The big question is simple: is the Hanhart a Rolex Explorer homage, or is it more of an alternative that just happens to live in the same lane? I go over crystals (flat vs slightly domed), dial execution (printed vs applied indices), lume types and performance, and the movements: Rolex 3230 (70 hours), Hanhart’s Soprod P024 (ETA 2824-2 style, 38 hours), and the Miyota 90S5 in the Tisell (42 hours). I also dig into steels and wear: the Hanhart’s hardened coating (1,200 HV) versus 316L and Rolex 904L, which looks bright but scratches easier in my experience. On wrist, the Tisell is the “from 10 feet away” Explorer look, but it’s not as refined up close. The Hanhart feels like its own watch—cathedral hands, Arabics, thin and comfortable—but the slightly domed crystal reflections and weak lume on the numerals are real downsides. At the end I show the lume, and yeah… if you’re a lume junkie, the Hanhart probably isn’t for you.
