In this video I’m basically talking through the question I keep going back and forth on: are 36 mm watches too small? For me, 36 mm is pretty much the minimum, and even then I’m still on the fence depending on the style. I pulled four watches that all live right around that size and I noted the dimensions—lug-to-lug, thickness, and lug width—because those numbers matter just as much as the diameter when you’re trying to figure out what actually wears “right.” I try each one on my 6.5-inch wrist and talk about what works and what doesn’t. The custom Explorer 1016 homage feels like an “okay” size, but the Armeta A11 diver is the one that usually looks too small to me—36 mm (and really a 35 mm case) just shrinks the dial too much once you add a rotating bezel. The Tudor Oyster Prince Date-Day wears great on a strap and has that classic case shape, and the Grand Seiko SBGR053 is in the same diameter ballpark but feels bigger thanks to the male end links—although it’s also thick, and I’m generally not a fan of thickness unless it’s a dive watch. I end by lining them up side-by-side and asking you to tell me what you think, because honestly, I’m still deciding.
