About This Video

In this video I’m answering a question I get all the time from UX beginners: is UX design a creative career? My personal opinion is yes—UX design is creative—but it’s not a full-time creative process in the way most people imagine. I also share a quick life update (I recently moved to LA), and then I break down why I think people get stuck on the wrong definition of “creative.” For me, the core of UX creativity is creative thinking: looking at problems from a fresh perspective and finding new ways to tackle challenges. In discovery, framing, and workshops, I’m constantly using creativity through problem solving, communication, presentation, and storytelling—not just UI visuals. Later in the process, the more “traditional” creative skills show up with wireframes, prototypes, UI design, visuals, and animation. But here’s the reality check: UX isn’t a full-time creative job because you’re heavily involved in business constraints—stakeholders, alignment, strategy, and lots of meetings. You often can’t move forward until you have mutual agreement and support. My final message is simple: UX design is a creative career with business constraints, and that’s the most realistic expectation—and honestly, I still feel fulfilled as a creative.
