About This Video

This video is my first week as a full-time UX designer at a coffee company (yup… Starbucks), and the whole theme is basically coffee, coffee, coffee. Even though I had already been contracting here, the full-time onboarding felt totally different—new team, new product space, new orientation. I walk you through the real stuff: intro’ing myself to the team, doing the admin verification, cleaning up my Slack channels (kind of sad, but it is the way it is), and getting settled into a new set of people and expectations. One of the highlights was the welcome kit / swag bag unboxing. It honestly went way beyond the usual “mug and stickers” situation—coffee beans, tea, an espresso mug with the original logo, a coffee passport, and even an apron. When you’re fully remote, that kind of package weirdly goes a long way because it makes you feel officially part of the company. We also had a “Coffee 101” segment where we literally smelled and slurped coffee (doing everything your mother told you not to do) and learned about flavor notes and brewing. From a UX career perspective, I also share what’s next: onboarding myself to the product front-to-back with a senior UX designer, and adjusting to a new challenge—working somewhere that has official UX researchers. I’ve been a “do everything myself” UX generalist for most of my career, so I’m curious how my role shifts when research is more specialized.
