About This Video

In this video, I’m sharing a week-in-the-life look at what it’s like transitioning into a new UX design job in Atlanta—during quarantine. I walk you through my first three weeks: the quick office trip to sign paperwork, then jumping into virtual orientation from home with the work MacBook my company shipped to me. Orientation was the usual (but important) stuff: company history, vision, core values, and getting access set up for internal tools, benefits, and payroll. Honestly, my first week wasn’t that eventful—and I was grateful for that. My manager had zero plans for me to meet designers or start real work right away. Instead, they told me to settle in, focus on orientation, and get benefits handled, which took a lot of pressure off. Since I had just moved, I also spent time building out my home setup with IKEA runs and basics like a standing desk. Weeks two and three were when things got real: I introduced myself to a huge UX org (150+ designers in my space), met my product team (PM + eight engineers), and scheduled a bunch of 1-on-1s to build rapport virtually. I also did product onboarding with my PM and a design onboarding with the outgoing designer, who walked me through wireframes and the design system. My biggest takeaway: remote transitions can feel less “official,” and it’s easy to pressure yourself to prove you’re useful immediately—so I had to remind myself to go step by step.
