About This Video

In this video I break down the idea that genuinely “unlocked” professional-looking miniature painting for me: there’s a logic behind what top painters do, and it boils down to three things—volume, finish, and environment. I use my latest box art project (Fus/Faustus from Abyssoul) to show how I’m thinking when I’m inventing light and form on gray plastic, instead of just copying reference and hoping it works. One wrong highlight or one bad color choice can make the whole thing collapse into chalky plastic, so I’m trying to be intentional, not careful. First, I start with volume: I’m asking what shape I’m painting (sphere, cube, cylinder) and sketching light accordingly—often with bold, confident brush strokes rather than smoothing everything to death. Then I move to finish: matte vs reflective, and especially how nonmetallic metal is basically painted reflections where contrast matters more than perfect blends. Finally, environment: what’s around the model, what colors are being reflected, and how that context makes metal (and everything else) feel like it exists somewhere. The goal is to internalize these rules until they’re automatic—then forget them and paint something that actually makes people feel something.
