About This Video

In this video I paint a Blood Angels scheme using only oils, and I keep it deliberately quick and tabletop-friendly without sacrificing that rich, competition-style depth. I start with an ugly, splotchy red acrylic basecoat over black primer (I’m using Chimera Vibrant Red), and I don’t stress about overspill because we’ll clean it later. The big rule: that acrylic base needs to be matte, because oils grip a matte surface way better—and the acrylic underlayer also boosts the vibrancy of the red oils on top. From there I sketch in a fast roadmap for the lights with pure Ice Yellow, then I show the core wet-on-wet blending trick I use everywhere: violet and magenta for saturated shadows, red to unify the midtone, and a soft dry blending brush to fuse the transitions. I keep the palette tight—neighbors to red—so the armor stays vibrant instead of drifting too pink or too orange. Highlights are orange-into-white for warmth, plus tiny, precise hits of pure white (and honestly, I think pure white can look better left unblended). I finish the armor with thinned violet dark lining to separate plates, then I tackle TMM in oils: burnt umber + Indian yellow + silver, letting them mix on the model for a green-gold contrast, and punching the edges back up with pure silver.
