About This Video

When the wind is ripping, it’s raining, snowing, or I’m not feeling well, I still need a way to eat without getting out of my SUV. In this video I walk you through exactly how I cook inside my car—and I keep it as simple and low-drama as possible. My whole “kitchen” is basically one side of the back of my Subaru Outback (no build), and I set it up so I can work off my cutting board like a tiny counter, grab what I need fast, and clean up without turning my car into chaos. I show my minimalist cooking gear (and why “the best gear is the gear you already have”), plus the little choices that make car cooking easier: I eat off real pottery because I genuinely like my environment to feel clean and beautiful, I use thermoses for hot meals like oatmeal, and I rely on a small electric kettle powered by my solar generator for quick hot water without a huge battery hit. I also explain why I don’t recommend using a Jetboil inside the car, even though I’ve done it with the window fully down during storms. I wrap up with how I handle dishes and water: I clean right away with a paper towel or baby wipes, or I heat a bit of water with Dr. Bronner’s and shake it up. I also avoid dumping food water on the ground so I’m not changing the environment or attracting animals near where I’m camped.
