We catch up with the goings on at UJP

About This Video

This week’s update is basically me doing what I always do at Uncle Joe’s Playhouse: talking weather, talking gear that’s breaking, and then falling head-first into whatever problem decided to show up today. Texas is doing that “it’s January but it’s 80 degrees” thing again, my vertical mouse is officially on my last nerve, and my Dell R730 picked the perfect time to stop booting. It gets the Windows circle, then black screen, no ping, no Ctrl-Alt-Del, nothing—so I start leaning toward the usual suspects: thermal cycling from powering servers on/off, something loose, or maybe the SSD finally tapped out. From there I pivot into solar and what it’s actually doing for my lab. I’m pulling real power numbers off both my 24V rack/office system and my 48V critical loads setup (Victron + EG4), and even in January I’m seeing meaningful production—enough that powering the rack on solar is absolutely paying for itself. I also rant a bit about the internet and kids on social media (because, yeah, it’s a mess), then I get back to homelab business: Hyper-V, importing Debian templates from my Synology exports, and showing how “Linux on Windows” is way more seamless than people want to admit. Gen 1 VMs behave, Gen 2 can get weird with video, and Hyper-V integration tools “just work” when the distro has the drivers baked in.
