Well greetings, people of the internet—Uncle Joe here. This weekly update is a little bit of everything: weird Texas weather (no rain for years, then the threat of a polar vortex), a birthday milestone, and the reality check that came with turning 60. I talk about why longevity doesn’t mean much if you can’t stay healthy, and how sitting in front of computers all day will absolutely wreck you if you don’t build some movement into your routine. My big “wake up” moment was simple: can I get up off the floor without crawling up on furniture? If not, it’s time to fix it. On the homestead side, I caught up on overdue maintenance—especially cameras and solar. I had multiple PoE cameras go down, and it came back to two classic mistakes: cheap copper-clad aluminum Cat5 that isn’t UV rated, and a connector/boot installed wrong so water collected and fried things. I replaced runs with outdoor-rated Cat6 and swapped a front porch Reolink camera (I’m still not a fan) for something I had on hand. Then I show what cleaning and clearing solar panels actually does: my production jumped from around 3 kWh/day up to 8–11 kWh/day on one system, and the 48V setup is now overproducing enough that I need to think about where to dump extra power (water heater is high on my list). I also rant a bit about Windows vs Linux—Windows isn’t going anywhere, and that’s why I run Windows 11 LTSC: less junk, more “get out of my way.”
