This week’s update is basically a “what’s going on at UJP” check-in with a little bit of everything: South Texas weather, my solar rabbit hole, and the usual homelab opinions you’ve come to expect from me. We had a cold front roll through (yeah, I’m whining about 49 freedom units), and the bigger issue is still rain—or the lack of it. It’s so dry here I can’t even do a burn pile because the wildfire risk is just too high, and that’s not a fun way to live.
On the solar side, I’m chasing a weird performance issue that’s got me fixating: my older 195W bifacial panels are outperforming the newer 200W bifacials, and I don’t like not understanding why. I also learned (the hard way) that my Victron MPPT 450/100 really wants higher panel voltage to behave efficiently—these controllers make way more sense when you’ve got lots of panels in series, not just a few big ones. So I ordered a smaller Victron controller (150/35) to better match the four larger panels.
Homelab-wise, I talk through why I’m not running Big Bertha (TrueNAS) 24/7—330W at idle adds up—while my Synology boxes sip power and just work. I also rant a bit about “Linux taking over the desktop” (it’s not), complain about clickbait tech videos, and lay out my plan for clearer, series-based content this year: Windows Lab, Proxmox Lab, solar, and more hands-on learning content.
