About This Video

In Tank Talk Episode 7, I’m doing a straight-up tour of my tanks and talking through what’s working, what’s a hot mess, and why I’m such a big believer in planted setups. I start with my 55-gallon planted “show tank” (it’s an old tank, but it’s thriving) where the shrimp, mollies, guppies, plecos, cories, and tetras all coexist. I point out a big health indicator for shrimp—molting—and you’ll even see a shrimp shell drift down. I also show the calcium pellets I use (those little white “rocks”) because shrimp need calcium to molt properly. From there I walk through a bunch of my smaller experimental tanks: a 10-gallon shrimp tank that’s been a huge success, a couple guppy overflow/breeding tanks, and my blue shrimp setup where I’m basically letting nature do its thing. I don’t do a lot of maintenance—usually just a weekly algae cleanup and top-offs—and I rarely even change water because the plants do a lot of the heavy lifting. I also cover a tannin-stained “dark” tank (healthy, not sick), introduce my betta Bubbles, and finish with the living room goldfish tank where duckweed and greens help prevent bloat and swim bladder issues. The main takeaway: planted tanks and a stable ecosystem make everything easier.
