About This Video

I don’t know about you, but getting packages still feels like Christmas to me—so I unboxed two pieces that finally let me use my workspace the way I’ve been wanting to. First up is a UGREEN 4-port HDMI KVM because I’m juggling a Windows 11 “uber workstation” (gaming + AI with dual RTX 3060s), an M2 Mac mini, a laptop, and now a resurrected 2009 Mac Pro. I’d tried another KVM before that absolutely hated the Mac (garbled video), so I spent a little more and grabbed the UGREEN—this thing is built like a tank and actually behaves. The other missing puzzle piece was networking. I only had one cable run to the desk and I’m not dragging more lines across the house, so I dropped in a UniFi USW Flex Mini to give me “connectivity for all the things.” Then I brought the old cheese-grater Mac Pro back from the dead: OpenCore, Ventura on the 256GB SSD, and Windows 11 Enterprise LTSC on the 1TB SSD. It boots both, it sees the drives, and yes—it even has a working DVD-RW. Big takeaway: these 2009 Mac Pros can still be useful, but you’ve got to respect the firmware/boot ROM risk when you start mixing Windows and modern macOS. Also, this beast is a pig on power—about 120W at idle—so it won’t be on 24/7, but it’s back in the rotation and I’ve got plans for it.
