I'd been dreaming about the Hans Rey gap at Mt Penn for 4 years and finally did it! A huge thank you to Logan and Evan for giving me the courage and inspiration to see it through. Also included are some of our favorite mountain bike trails and features like John’s Rock, Neko’s Drop, and the Network. This MTB ride happened on Feb 4, 2024. I would love to know what your “Hans Rey” moment was, please share it in the comments below. Note: Some of these features are not labeled on Trailforks so Dan and I came up with our own names to help us navigate around the mountain. TRAIL DETAIL: John’s Rock can be found off of Chuck Chutes and Ladders, look for the green paint mark on the tree and follow the trail down to the big boulder we call John’s Rock. When you finish rolling it make a left anywhere to head back to the main trail. Neko’s Drop is at the top of Skyline. There are two other lines to the right that allow you to bypass it if you are not comfortable hitting it. The drop itself is not scary, but all the chunk leading up to it makes it that much more difficult. Skyline is labeled double black, but I would personally rate it a black trail. The Network is one of our favorite lines coming off the ridge. If you take Network bottom you will see an optional skinny that is quite challenging. A little further down this will connect into Network Rock Over which is a must hit if you like rock tech. Hans Rey is not labeled on Trailforks, but it can be found by making the first right off of Skill Hill. It starts with a sketchy slab into a rock roll before you end up at the infamous gap jump. I feel like it is more of a step down but regardless it is a must clear because casing it could lead to serious injury. The gap launches you over a fallen tree and is about 15 feet to the landing. Once you clear the corner let go of the brakes and that should be the correct speed to clear the gap.
