Snuffle mats are one of my favorite indoor dog enrichment activities—especially when it’s too hot or too cold to get outside. In this video, I’m testing two store-bought snuffle mats from PawzNDogz (their Butterfly and the heavy-duty “Fire and Ice” style) and comparing them to my tried-and-true DIY snuffle mat that I made last year for under $10. I walk you through why snuffle mats work so well for olfactory enrichment (nose work!), plus the cognitive “brain game” element and the physical piece—because your dog is moving, pawing, and problem-solving to get the food out. I also show exactly how I load the Butterfly mat with kibble (you really don’t need a ton) and how you can adjust the difficulty depending on your dog’s experience level. My DIY mat is thick, lush, and washable, but it’s not as durable and it doesn’t have a non-slip backing. The PawzNDogz mats feel sturdier, more complex, and more secure on the floor—plus the Fire and Ice option is designed to be more chew-resistant and includes suction cups to help prevent flinging. Most importantly: I don’t use enrichment as a babysitter. I stay present with my dog (hi, Bert), because doing it together is part of the point—and it deepens your bond.
