About This Video

In this video, I show you how to serve images in WebP format in WordPress automatically—without turning it into a “project.” I start by explaining what’s interesting about WebP: it uses more efficient compression methods than the usual JPEG/PNG approach, and in practice that can mean images that are even up to 80% smaller. I’m not going to pretend I’m an expert on the math under the hood (I’m not), but I do care about the real-world result: smaller images usually mean faster loading and better performance. Then I walk you through a quick before-and-after test using Chrome DevTools (Network tab). First, you’ll see the baseline: images loading right away in their native JPEG format—even images you haven’t scrolled to yet. After that, I install and activate Optimole (it’s very much “install and forget”), connect the account, and refresh the page. Now the same images are served in modern formats like WebP and even AVIF, and Optimole also handles lazy loading by default—so images further down the page won’t load until you actually scroll to them. The takeaway: you can get modern image formats, compression, CDN delivery, and lazy loading with basically one plugin activation.
