From what’s been said so far, Project Helix is basically Xbox’s next generation console that’s also going to play PC games. The key detail is that it’s supposed to be a Windows 11 PC, which means you’re not just locked into one ecosystem—you should be able to run other storefronts like Steam and the Epic Game Store too. Microsoft’s CEO also said more will be discussed at GDC, so this is one of those announcements where the real details are still coming. I also answer the big questions people are already asking: yes, it’s expected to be backwards compatible, so your Xbox One and Xbox Series games should carry forward. And the closest comparison that came to my mind is the Atari VCS—console storefront plus PC gaming—but the difference is Helix is rumored to be way more powerful. Performance is rumored around “5080 level” (grain of salt), and pricing is what’s going to limit it: I’m expecting around $1,000 to $1,200 realistically, possibly up to $1,500. Release is rumored for late 2027, and I don’t see it as a PS6 killer—I see it more like a Steam Machine competitor with a niche audience.
