About This Video

In this video, I share my go-to online teaching game ideas for ESL learners when I want vocabulary practice to feel interactive (not stressful). After 20+ years in schools, I’ve seen how a quick, low-prep game can lower the affective filter—especially for students who feel nervous about speaking up online. These activities are designed to get students listening, speaking, reading, and writing while they’re focused on the “game” instead of worrying about making mistakes. I walk you through several free PowerPoint-style vocabulary games you can use right away, like Hidden Pictures and Mystery Box, plus a set of quiz-question templates that make it easy to plug in your own target words. I also include sentence stems because vocabulary practice is so much stronger when students have the language support to answer in complete sentences. If you’re teaching online and you want students engaged with academic vocabulary without spending hours prepping, these are simple tools you can rotate weekly to keep participation high and instruction purposeful.
