In this “day in the life” ESL teacher vlog, I take you with me during summer break and share what’s really been on my mind after this past school year in an inner-city district. Even when school is out, I’m still reflecting on my students, my classroom, and the bigger questions that are shaping how we teach—especially when it comes to anti-bias curriculum and anti-bias education. I wanted this video to feel like we’re just talking teacher-to-teacher, because I know many of you are processing the same things. I share why I believe this is such an important moment in our nation’s history to think critically about curriculum choices and what messages we’re sending multilingual learners through what we teach (and what we avoid). I also point you toward resources that helped me think more deeply, including the book “We Are Not From Here,” the Be About It conference, and Motivos Magazine. My goal isn’t to have the “perfect” answer—it’s to open up a real conversation about what your district is planning for next year and how we can support ELLs with instruction that’s thoughtful, inclusive, and honest.
