In this clip from my Shrek Retold chaos, we hit the Ratboy Genius scene where Shrek and Donkey finally clock Duloc in the distance. Donkey’s like “that’s it, that’s it right there,” and I’m immediately in the weeds with the classic vibe check: “so that must be Lord Farquaad’s castle… do you think maybe he’s compensating for something?” It’s that perfect moment where the fairy-tale quest energy collides with dumb little jokes that make fan films worth making. From there it’s all about the tension and the weird quiet before the crowd shows up—“it’s quiet, too quiet, where is everybody?”—and then we slam into the Duloc spectacle. The whole point of this scene (and Shrek Retold in general) is taking something iconic and letting different creators inject their own flavor, while still landing the beats people remember. Also yes, we literally do the “wow, let’s do that again” thing, because if you’re not replaying the bit until it breaks, are you even doing comedy fan films?
