About This Video

Shrek 2 Retold is delayed, and yeah—this is me officially pushing the release from September 28th to “whenever the heck it’s done.” I’m Grant Dufferin, CEO of a production company I made up called 3GI Industries, and I wanted to be straight with you: making movies is hard. Not in a dramatic “everything’s on fire” way—more like the work is going well, it’s just taking longer than our best guesses. With over 900 collaborators, this is the biggest crowdsourced thing we’ve ever attempted, and it’s on track to be one of the most ambitious crowdsourced films ever produced. In the video, I talk through what happened with our 2023 work-in-progress premiere at Shrekfest—how we pushed like maniacs, pulled an export-all-nighter, and still got a full back-to-front version on screen without ever having to drop in the original movie as a placeholder. Hearing the crowd react was honestly magical and super validating. I also get candid about the toll: this project is a heavy investment of my time, money, and mental health (it’s a little bit ruining my life, but that’s okay). If you want the full nearly two-hour behind-the-scenes update with sneak peeks and the exact remaining to-do list, that’s on Patreon—because YouTube watchers “ain’t gonna see” that part.
