We bloody made it—Dirk Hartog Island, the most western adventure you can do in WA, and I took the whole fam over for a week of proper exploring. Day one was all about getting the 11-metre rig-and-trailer combo onto the barge (yep, it just fits), rolling into the Homestead Bay area, and then watching Tash try to reverse me into camp… which was as chaotic as you’d expect. From there we got shown around the homestead facilities (proper flushing toilets, camp kitchen, bar, even rooms if you’re not set up to camp) and then we got straight into the fun stuff—secret dune tracks, sandboarding missions, and a couple of “no way we’re driving up that” moments. The wind absolutely howled, so we shuffled plans, did some fishing (some days you get dusted, some days you clean up), moved camps, and then started pushing down south to places like Surf Point and the blow holes. The tracks are corrugated as, wildlife everywhere, and every kilometre the island changes—desert vibes one minute, cliffside ocean chaos the next. We also did a side quest with Big Ollie to his secret sea-salt spot (actual salt rocks, proper sea salt), and then finished it off with the run to Cape Inscription and hunting down Nature’s Window at Mystery Beach. Bucket list stuff—don’t wait, take the trip.
