About This Video

In this Desk Dispatch, I’m sharing a few of the analog tools and little rituals that have been shaping my days lately—starting with a new pocket fountain pen that’s been living in my Lochby wallet. I’ve been using the Traveler’s Company brass fountain pen for a couple months now, and I get why people call it trusty and reliable. It’s small, it posts into a full-size writing experience, and it hasn’t dried out on me even when I leave it for days. The one caveat: I did have a black ink spill after a hard drop popped the cartridge loose, so it’s worth keeping in mind if you’re rough on your gear. I also walk through a DIY Traveler’s Notebook refill that’s been a total game changer for me: a Midori MD A5 that I had cut down at Staples with their big cutter for a perfectly clean edge. I wanted more paper, more bang for buck, and that Midori paper gives me a toothy, versatile surface for fountain pen, sketching, and a bit of watercolor—all in one catch-all insert. From there I do a quick three-month check-in on the Bleu de Chauffe Zeppo business bag (the leather is patina-ing beautifully and the flap is holding up), and I close out with what’s currently spinning as part of my ongoing digital minimalism push: Bruce Springsteen’s Born in the U.S.A., Beethoven’s Pastoral (6th), and the Chico Hamilton Quintet. Vinyl is inconvenient in the best way—it forces me to slow down and listen with intention.
