In this Desk Dispatch, I’m back at the desk talking through a few analog tools and routines that have been keeping me grounded—plus a little digital minimalism in service of a more intentional life. I share why the smartphone is both wildly useful and wildly addictive (Instagram reels… I’m looking at you), and how I’ve been trying to “flip the narrative” by reaching for something skillful when I reach for my phone. That’s where Brilliant comes in for me: quick, visual problem-solving lessons that have actually become a daily habit in small, digestible chunks. On the stationery side, I unbox and review two stunning new BENU fountain pens: the BENU Haute “Chic” and the BENU Tribute “HA” (Hannya mask-inspired). I talk about what makes BENU feel so distinctive—glint, glitter, bold aesthetics, and genuinely great writing performance with their #6 Schmidt fine nibs. I also finally settle on a mechanical pencil: the Rotring 600 (and why the Rotring 800 didn’t work for my writing style due to the back-heavy balance).
