Record Store Day is honestly one of the most exciting (and slightly chaotic) days in the vinyl community, so in this video I’m breaking it down for beginners: what RSD is, how it works, and how to make your day as successful as possible. It’s a biannual event—usually one day in April and then again in November for Black Friday—meant to celebrate independently owned, brick-and-mortar record stores. The big thing is The List: special releases that are only sold at participating indie stores on the day of the event, and a lot of them are limited, which is where the stress comes in. I walk you through the different release types (Exclusives, RSD First, and Small Run/Regional) and why I personally prefer checking the web version of the list so you can click into titles for details like pressing info and tracklists. Then I explain the real-life logistics: not every store participates, not every store orders every title, and your store’s opening time basically determines how early people start lining up. I’ve shown up as early as 4 a.m. and as late as 8 a.m.—it truly depends on what you’re hunting and how limited it is. Finally, I share my best tips: check in with your local store, consider hitting multiple stores, plan for weather and safety, make a priority list so you don’t panic-buy, and (most importantly) have fun. Also: please don’t fall for scalpers. Just don’t do it.
