About This Video

In this video I’m doing a full first-listen album reaction to Madison Beer’s Lock It, because y’all requested it like crazy and I finally had to see what the hype was about. Going in, my Madison history is basically nonexistent (aside from loving “Home to Another One”), so I’m really listening as a true first-timer and trying to figure out if Miss Madison Beer is about to join my pop girlies list. I start track-by-track with “Lockit theme,” immediately comparing the vibe to Ariana’s “Honeymoon Avenue” intro (strings + harmonies? yes please), and then I get whiplash in the best/worst way when “Yes, Baby” swings into a house/electronic lane. As the album goes on, I talk a lot about cohesiveness—because I love when an album feels intentional—and I keep clocking two big directions: synth-pop/electronic moments vs. more ’90s/early-2000s R&B-leaning tracks. Some songs really hit for me (stacked harmonies on “Bad Enough,” dreamy vocal effects on “You’re Still Everything”), while others bored me a bit (“for the night,” “Bittersweet,” and most of “Nothing at all,” even though I liked parts). By the end, I rate Lock It a 6/10: not bad, just left me a little confused about who she is as an artist—BUT I still walked away with standouts I’ll absolutely replay.
