We use a combination of machines, barbells and cables to fully stimulate all the different muscles in the upper and lower back. I do believe you need to hit the back with a variety of different angles and types of load whether it's a machine or cable to achieve maximum muscular development. Full Back Workout Explained. We are fortunate at my gym Ultimate Fitness Birmingham to have a great variety of quality back machines which will help you hit every different part of your back. The Nautilus Pullover is always my first go-too exercise to warm up and activate the lats. We hit 4 sets of 10 reps with the last set hitting muscular failure. Next exercise is the seal row which we do on the purpose made seal row bench. One of my absolute favorite back exercises to build thickness in the upper back. Doing this way is more effective than the conventional barbell bent over row as it is a lot more stricter and takes the lower back out of the movement. Hammer Iso Pulldowns is another one of my favourites as this particular machine really targets and isolates the lats especially when done unilaterally. Next we do hyper extensions to warm up the lower back and this exercise is more of an activation movement before we do dead-lifts. I have over 30 years of weight training and have trained with many top IFBB Pro bodybuilders and have gained a great wealth of knowledge and experience.
