Although these platforms are generally safe, fraudsters use certain features to exploit users and carry out P2P payment scams. The "Request Money" scam is one of the most common types, in which a fraudster requests money from the victim's account, appearing to be from a legitimate source, and the victim ends up paying or contacting the scammer, who poses as a helpful agent and asks for personal information or software downloads to steal further data. To avoid these scams, users should be wary of unsolicited requests, verify the sender's identity, avoid clicking links, and be cautious about sharing personal information online. Other common P2P scams include fake job postings, romance scams, overpayment scams, tech support scams, and sweepstakes and lottery scams. Users should use P2P payment platforms with strong security features, never send money to unknown or untrusted sources, and verify payments through the P2P platform itself before sending items. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) encourages the public to report any suspected P2P scams. Lastly, it is recommended to remove unnecessary names from the payment list and be careful when using joint accounts to avoid loss of funds.
