Trying is honestly one of the hardest parts about sewing—especially when it involves cutting into fabric you love, sewing that first seam, or tackling techniques you’re not 100% confident in yet. In this video, I talk about what’s really happening in that moment of doubt: the fear of imperfection, the fear of being seen figuring it out, and the pressure we put on ourselves to “get it right” the first time. I share some very real examples from my own sewing life—like how I avoid buttonholes (snaps are my workaround), how I tend to choose sleeveless or easy sleeves, and why fitting on camera can feel particularly vulnerable even though I’m a certified Palmer/Pletsch fit instructor. But everything you want from sewing is on the other side of trying. I walk through how confidence is built step-by-step, the same way patterns are written: one step leads to the next. I also remind you to celebrate tiny wins—like when the ends of a seam actually match up (best feeling ever) or when a dart goes in clean on the first try. Real-life sewing is messy, editing is real, and perfectionism creates fear that keeps you stuck. Trying isn’t the risk—not trying is. And finishing is how you get to say, “Thanks. I made it.”
